What is sober living — and is it right for you?

Leaving treatment is a turning point. Sober living gives you the structure to keep going — without putting your life on hold.

Sober living, defined

A sober living home is a substance-free residence where people in recovery live together, share responsibilities, and support each other while they rebuild their lives. It isn't a hospital and it isn't a clinic. It's a home — with expectations, routine, and people around you who understand what you're working through.

Most residents arrive after completing detox or a treatment program, though some come straight from their own homes when they realize they need a steadier environment. What they share is a decision: they want to stay sober, and they know it's easier with structure and community than alone.

Sober living vs. rehab

Treatment centers focus on intensive clinical care — therapy, medical oversight, and a schedule built almost entirely around treatment. That intensity is the point, but it can't last forever. Eventually you have to practice recovery in the real world.

Sober living is where that practice happens. You go to work or school, attend meetings, see your therapist or doctor, cook your meals, and keep your commitments — while living in a substance-free house with other men in recovery. You get freedom, and you get the accountability that keeps that freedom from turning into a relapse.

Think of it this way: treatment helps you get sober. Sober living helps you build a life that keeps you sober.

Why the months after treatment matter so much

The weeks and months after treatment are often the most fragile stretch of early recovery. Old routines, old neighborhoods, and old relationships are still there. Stress shows up — work, money, family — and the coping skills you just learned haven't had time to become habits.

A stable home changes the math. When the people around you are also committed to recovery, when someone is on site around the clock, and when there is a routine to follow, it becomes much easier to make the next right decision — and then the one after that.

What daily life looks like

Every house runs a little differently. At Next Phase in Tarzana, daily life is built around three things: a stable home, a meaningful routine, and genuine connection.

Residents keep the house drug- and alcohol-free, which is supported by regular drug testing. Groceries are provided and residents cook for themselves, with communal dinners that bring the house to the same table. Days include work, school, or job searching, recovery meetings, and time for health and wellness — an onsite gym, a backyard with a pool, spa and sauna, and plenty of hiking, yoga, tennis and pickleball close by.

Support staff are on site 24/7, and case management helps each man set goals and work toward them — from appointments and court dates to budgeting and finding a job. Transportation support gets residents where they need to go while they work toward getting there on their own.

Signs sober living is the right fit

You want structure, but you also want to get back to work, school, and family. You know home isn't the safest place for your recovery right now. You've tried staying sober alone and found it harder than expected. You want to be around men who get it.

If any of that sounds familiar, sober living is worth a serious look. It isn't a sign that you're failing — it's a sign that you're taking recovery seriously enough to protect it.

How to take the next step

Start with a conversation. Ask about the house, the expectations, the staff, and what a typical week looks like. Then come see it in person — a sober living home should feel like a place you could actually live.
